So I heard you're interested in our little establishment. Well, there's a bit of learning involved and I'm happy to help with that. Perhaps we should start with a tasting?

[Arkady is puttering around, teleporting now and again to save time or rescue a dropped glass. She's clearly coping with her loss, but wears the occasional sadface. She's pretty much letting in anyone who knocks.]

I'm actually not used to so much linearity either. But I have gotten better at translating back and forth since my last Upgrade.

Actually I basically used telepathy to acquaint myself with it. Humans are very used to linear time and once you get used to that point of view it's fairly easy. I can easily pass on that knowledge.

I've been in enough ports as a human or similar to know the general idea, it just always seems a frustrating and narrow way to experience the world.

It is, it is. The illusion of linear time is something that humans get because of the way their brains are wired. They "see" time as linear, instead of grokking the wibbly-wobbly-timey-wiminess. I'm not sure but I think the ability to handle the truth is likely locked away in one of the unused portions of the human brain.

It's a word made up by one of my favorite writers. It means "to understand fully". You see, the aliens whose language the word comes from are these great froggy fellows, so their whole language sounds a bit like that.

What makes you think that about the human brain, though?

Good portions of the human brain go completely unused in normal people, but are active in psychics, for example. It is just like human DNA--a great deal of our makeup is inactive genes. Who knows what abilities we would unlock if we could awaken them?

What an interesting idea! Is there anyone working on such a thing?

That's my job actually! I am a psychonaut. Expanding my mind's capacities and paving the way for others is entirely my occupation back home, besides generally helping out anyway.

Well yes, I do, but nowadays I don't think I'm actually doing enough with it, you know? I'm thinking of taking on students. Charles especially. He's such a dear and the burden on him is huge.
